Are You on Apple Maps Yet?

With the latest iOS 6 software update for iPhone and iPad, Apple users will no longer be using Google Maps to provide local search results for businesses and service providers. Instead, Apple will be using their own technology called Apple Maps to display local information.

For mortgage brokers, it is important to be in the local search results when people are searching for mortgage professionals on their mobile and handheld devices. Before the recent Apple software update, if you had a Google Places listing, people could find you on almost any smartphone or tablet.

However with the iOS 6 software upgrade, you have to create a business listing on Apple Maps to remain searchable by iPhone and iPad users, which comprises of nearly 30% of smartphones and 70% of tablets.

Follow these steps to get listed on Apple Maps.

1) Check if you are currently on Apple Maps already

If you are actively promoting yourself on local business directories, you may already be listed on Apple Maps.

To check, you need an iPhone or iPad that has been upgraded to iOS 6. The latest iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6 pre-installed.

On the device, open the Maps application and search for your name. If you operate under a different business name, search for that instead. Also include your location in your searches.

For example, search for:

  • name + city
  • name + city + state
  • name + street address

2) How to Get Listed on Apple Maps

If you didn’t have any luck finding your listing, it probably means you are not currently on Apple Maps. There are two ways to get listed on Apple Maps.

If you own an iPhone or iPad:

Reporting a Problem on Apple Maps

  1. Make sure you are running the latest iOS 6 on your device.
  2. Open the Maps application.
  3. Search for your name.
  4. Tap on the page fold in the bottom-right corner.
  5. Tap on “Report a Problem”.
  6. Select “Location is missing”, then tap “Next”.
  7. Position the pin to your location, then tap “Next”.
  8. Enter your business information as detailed as possible. Include important keywords like your name, your services and specialties as a mortgage broker.
  9. Make sure to select the right category.
  10. Double-check that your information is correct, then tap “Send”.

If you do not own an iPhone or iPad:

YelpApple Maps uses Yelp to get information about local businesses. So if you create or have a listing on Yelp, Apple Maps will absorb that information into their databases.

To create a Yelp business listing, go to and follow the steps.

After you’ve submitted your information, expect to wait 1-2 weeks for your listing to be available on Apple Maps.

Apple will continue to push Apple Maps to all current and future devices, so the sooner you can get on the new map, the better you will be positioned to generate more leads online.
